Talitha Cumi! Adolescent Self-Discovery was created to help participants build emotional intelligence and gain a greater sense of self:
• Self-awareness
• Self-confidence
• Self-esteem
• Self-identity
• Self-worth
• Self-control/regulation
So that they demonstrate improved academic performance, improved behavior, and better citizenship in school, in the community, and in the home.
The objective of Talitha Cumi! is to create a supportive and nurturing environment where adolescent females can have a safe place and a safe space to address issues that concern them, thereby reducing instances of high-risk behavior which often result in academic failure, poor family relationships, and juvenile probation and/or detention. As stated above, our focus is on helping the participants to develop a greater, more positive sense of self. These core elements of self-discovery will be enhanced with components of character development (trustworthiness, fairness, respect, caring, responsibility, and citizenship). Facilitation of this program is purposely designed to cultivate and encourage healthy development of adolescent females using a framework of open, honest, and respectful dialogue.
To increase understanding and deepen learning of the topics presented, various methods of delivery and instruction will be used. This includes, but is not limited to restorative justice circle, worksheets, small group exercises, role play, experiential exercises, and the use of music, videos, and other media. Quotes and historical references may be interjected. Research by Daniel Goleman, psychologist, and author of the book, “Emotional Intelligence”, indicates that ongoing feedback improves emotional intelligence.
Therefore, participants will receive cyclic feedback. Each session will start with an opening circle and will close with the same. Restorative Justice Circle time is also an opportunity for participants to share reflections and receive feedback.
